The picture book ish by Peter H. Reynolds helps teachers educate students on topics such as kindness, encouraging others, perfection, and talents that we have. Teachers, counselors, and other professionals can use the book and this companion resource for students with low self-esteem, and it’s great for all students as well! The book is a great example of how we can use literature to help instill Social Emotional Learning skills into our students’ hearts and minds.
This resource, which focuses on the CASEL Competency of Self-Awareness, includes a lesson plan and twelve student-driven activities that focus on SEL topics.
In the lesson plan, you will find:
- A “Before Reading” activity and discussion questions.
- “During The Reading” discussion questions.
- An “After the Reading” activity and/or discussion questions.
The student-driven activities focus around:
- Close-reading comprehension questions that all focus on the SEL skills you want your students to learn and practice.
- Questions that challenge students’ thinking on a topic.
- Questions that reinforce what they might do or say if they were in the story.
- Working definitions of SEL skills (such as perfection)
