Description
Practice test taking skills, reinforce solid writing techniques, and keep your students engaged with this bundle of products! Let’s face it- state testing is one of those things we just have to deal with. These resources will make your life easier so you can focus on teaching!
These eight resources were designed to prepare your students in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades for their state testing in writing.
Each packet includes paired passages and a writing prompt that asks students to complete an expository or persuasive essay. Students read the passages and then respond to a prompt by writing a multi-paragraph essay. The passages were written at the mid grade reading level (i.e., 3rd is written at mid-3rd) to mimic passages they will see on a test.
This product addresses the following skills and grade levels:
- 3rd Grade Informational Writing
- 3rd Grade Opinion Writing
- 4th Grade Informational Writing
- 4th Grade Opinion Writing
- 5th Grade Informational Writing
- 5th Grade Opinion Writing
- 6th Grade Informational Writing
- 6th Grade Argumentative Writing
Each activity and resource has clear student directions, is written as students would see on a state test, and comes with templates and digital access!
THIS PRODUCT INCLUDES:
- ✍️ Writing Checklist: Students can check their work against a checklist that contains the basic tenets of writing and mirrors a rubric. Many, if not all, of these skills will be assessed on your state’s writing assessment. I have provided a student self-assessment and a teacher rating column.
- ✍️ Passages & Prompts: This bundle of activities was designed so that students would have to use two or three different sources to answer questions. In the United States, this is common practice during state testing. The prompts are set up to look similar to state testing formats.
- ✍️ Writing Templates: For many students who struggle with writing, practicing a framework for writing is often helpful for them in achieving proficiency on a state assessment. I have developed templates that allow you, the teacher, to scaffold instruction for your learners. This template guides students to write using a formulaic response that will help boost their scores on state assessments! I pull one of the paragraphs away each day until students have the overall design and sentence starters memorized.
- ✍️ Writing Paper: I have included lined paper for you to use with your students if you take a paper version of the state test.
- ✍️ Rubric: In addition to the checklists, I have included a teacher rubric for you to use as you score the practice assessments.
- DIGITAL ACCESS: The entire product comes in a Google Slides version as well if you use an online testing system. Students can practice typing their responses. You can easily plug these passages into LMS systems like Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.
Your students will feel accomplished and ready after using this resource, as it allows them to practice what this part of the test will be like come test day!
It’s so easy for you as well- just print or digitally assign the passages and prompt, and you’re done!
