OVERVIEW

This self-checking math game is designed for 5th grade students to practice calculating the volume of rectangular prisms and cubes. The game consists of 30 questions, broken into 10 checkpoints of 3 questions each. Students receive immediate feedback on their answers, promoting self-assessment and independent learning.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

To practice and reinforce 5th grade volume skills, specifically calculating the volume of rectangular prisms and cubes using the V = l x w x h formula.

  • Please note: this resource does not include practice with the V=Bh formula.

TECHNOLOGY NEEDED – Multiple Options Offered!

  • PowerPoint Version: Requires a device with Microsoft PowerPoint installed.
  • Google Slides Version: Requires a device with internet access and a Google account to access Google Slides.
  • Google Classroom Integration: A tutorial is provided to help import the game into Google Classroom for easy access and distribution.

WHAT’S INCLUDED?

  • Show Your Work Pages: An answer sheet is included for students to show their work. Teachers can collect this for grading or use it to monitor student progress. The primary purpose of the game is practice, not formal assessment.
  • Answer Key: An answer key is provided for teachers to quickly check student work.
  • Tutorials: Step-by-step tutorials are provided for using the game in Google Slides and importing it into Google Classroom.

HOW TO PLAY

  • Starting the Game: Students open the game in Google Slides, PowerPoint, or Interactive PDF.
  • Answering Questions: Students answer a series of 30 multiplication questions.
    • Questions 1-21 are traditional volume questions, such as 2 x 3 x 6 = ___.
    • Questions 22-27 require students to count units in a partially filled prism, and then calculate volume using that information.
    • Questions 28-30 have a missing dimension, such as 3 x 5 x ___ = 60 cubic units.
  • Self-Checking Feedback: If a student selects the correct answer, they advance to the next question. If a student selects an incorrect answer, they are prompted to go back to the last checkpoint (every 3 questions) and try again. To keep students motivated, they earn ribbons as they move through the game. Ribbons are earned after questions 9, 18, and 30.
  • Completing the Game: The game continues until all questions are answered correctly.

DURATION OF PLAY
The game typically takes 10-30 minutes to complete, depending on the student’s proficiency level.
