Get your students engaged and having fun as they practice context clues! This resource is designed for your students to practice defining words using context clues task cards. It’s perfect for word study and vocabulary acquisition within reading passages.

This context clues task card resource is print-and-go ready for you to use in your upper elementary classroom. There are 40 sentences total to define using context clues: 20 nonsense words, and 20 academic content words from Math, Science, and Social Studies topics.

What’s included?

• Task Card Set #1: Nonsense Words. Use this set of task cards with nonsense words to work on the SKILL of context clues. These task cards are not designed to teach new vocabulary. Once your kids can do THIS part of Context Clues, they’ll be able to effectively use context clues when faced with the challenge of real vocabulary words.
• Task Card Set #2: Content-Area Vocabulary. Use this set of task cards once your students have practiced the concept of Context Clues. These are social studies, science, ELA, and mathematics terms aimed at Grades 3-5 students.
• Blank task card templates to fill in your own Context Clues sentences or questions (using PowerPoint).
• Answer keys and answer sheets.

The resource is easily adaptable to a wide range of uses, from independent work to station rotations. It’s so easy to use that you can even print this and a sub will have no problem teaching this lesson!

★HOW TO USE TASK CARDS AND/OR PLAY “SCOOT”★

–> Option 1: Print out the cards and cut them out. Students SCOOT the cards in a circle around the room. The cards move, and the kids don’t.

–> Option 2: Print out the cards, tape them all around your classroom, and have students SCOOT around the room with their answer sheets. The kids move, and the cards don’t.

–> Option 3: Each student gets their own set of cards. This might be helpful if your students are struggling to find the actual CLUES in the writing. Students highlight or mark up the cards.
