Transform your reading block with these complete, low-prep novel study units designed for upper elementary and middle school students. Each unit includes deep-thinking comprehension questions, engaging read-aloud discussion prompts, and standards-aligned activities that make novel studies manageable and meaningful.
Ever wish you could spend less time planning and more time actually engaging with your students during read aloud? As a teacher, I know that read aloud time is precious – it’s when we build community and foster a love of reading. These novel studies take the prep work off your plate so you can focus on what matters most: connecting with your students through amazing stories.
Teaching is time-consuming, so I have created LOW PREP novel studies to make your planning easier! These units are truly print-and-go or digitally assign-and-go ready, and they will last you the entire school year.

⭐ INSIDE OF EACH NOVEL STUDY PACKET, YOU WILL FIND:
✨ Comprehension questions – Sections of the text have 3-6 questions, all of which are short answer. The questions range in difficulty from DOK 1 to DOK 4. Each student will have their own journal to respond to their questions, and the journal is themed around the novel they’re reading. For example, when reading The Wild Robot, they write in Roz’s journal.
✨ Read aloud questions – I’ve taken the work out of this novel and created prompts and questions to guide each day’s read aloud. These questions range from DOK 2-4 and were written so that you can engage your students in critical thinking and reflection about the novel.
✨ Ready-to-use student response journals – The journal entries (which show up periodically throughout each novel study) will allow your students to think critically about the novel and process what they are reading.
✨ Colorful character posters – I have included posters for each of the main characters in each novel.
✨ Cross-curricular extension activities – I’ve included directions for enrichment projects that will extend the learning even further for your students. Social studies, science, social justice, growth mindset, and other similar topics are tied in throughout the year
✨ Answer keys and teacher guides
